Wellbeing Wednesday.....

The skies are sunny and Spring is everywhere....but  I've been spending a lot of time taking my folks to doctors and hospital visits...spending so much time around sick people and the elderly has made me take a good look at my own health....I always have the best intentions but continually fall of the healthy bandwagon...It really is time to take not only mine, but also my man's health seriously. I really want us to enjoy old age (not there just yet!) and think it's really important to do as much as you can to maintain a healthy mind, body and soul.

Juicing is an easy way to get lots of good stuff into you...I keep forgetting to make them...will aim for 4  times a week....it's messy cleaning out the juicer but worth it.
My favourite mix, organic carrots, apples, oranges and kale from the vegie patch

Drink straight away....I really love the taste of this one.
Eat more vegies...I shop weekly at the local organic store in Kallista...the amazing colours of fresh fruit and vegies  bursting with goodness.....also need to up the fruit intake...don't think we are doing the two pieces of fruit per day.
Lovely organic vegies...the milk is what I use to make my own yoghurt and the organic sourdough is made locally.
Healthy lunches....today was chicken and avocado with garden greens and feta.....will try to enjoy salad vegies daily...it is tricky over winter but so easy when the sun is shining..

Today's lunch.....I love avocado and use it on sandwiches instead of butter..
Keep growing our vegies...the broccoli finally got some good solid heads on them...will pick these babies for dinner tomorrow night..
Beautiful broccoli heads...finally..

On the weekend I purchased a seed sprouter...I know you can sprout in a jar but I think it will be easier in this contraption....instructions say sprouts in 3 - 5 days.....see how we go...it's only been one day so far...should be great to add to salads.
Sprouting seeds....alfalfa and been shoots
Also need to concentrate on fitness....my man's okay...but I am very unfit...will try to walk the dogs everyday and continue with my yoga practice...along with a busy garden and house to maintain that will hopefully be enough....While keeping my spirit strong with meditation......Namaste.
What do you do to stay healthy ?

Small Steps to Sustainability.......

I  get so tired of hearing people discount everything I do to try and reduce my impact on the environment and the wellbeing of the planet. I'm told that one person can't make a difference, I'm told that there is no proof that the food I am buying is organic....that I am wasting my time and my money...I'm told we will all pay more for everything if there is a carbon tax....the list goes on.  Yes we will pay more for stuff if there is a carbon tax...and so we should if it makes us consciously reduce what we do.... I have no guarantee that the fruit and vegies I buy are organic but the imperfections on pesticide free fruit and vegies is a dead giveaway....organic food is not as pretty as the chemically treated variety...Do I believe one person can make a difference....possibly not...I know that everything I do can be easily undone by someone else....but if everyone did at least a few simple things...then yes it would make a great difference....we need to reduce our consumption ...the planet cannot continue to sustain our existence if we don't.

Rinsed out zip lock bags ready to re-use....

Is it a bit weird to rinse out zip lock bags to re-use them....I hate buying anything made of plastic but I use them in the freezer.  If I can use them again and again it reduces the need for more plastic.  It's not hard to do and I think every little bit helps.  Everyone can do things to live more sustainably .
  1. Eat Less Meat , have meat free meals as often as possible
  2. Refuse plastic bags, reusable shopping bags are cheap , no excuses
  3. Recycling , have a separate bin for recyclables
  4. Composting, have a scrap bucket in the kitchen for scraps for the compost
  5. Don't use takeaway cups, plastic cutlery or paper napkins
  6. Avoid over- packaged foods
  7. Use hankies not tissues, cloth napkins not paper
  8. Don't buy bottled water in plastic bottles, carry water from home in eco bottles
  9. Don't replace mobiles, I-pods, I-pads and gadgets just to update
  10. Use recycled toilet paper, printing paper, paper towels (if you have to use them)
These suggestions are nothing new and they are not hard.  You just have to want to make a difference.  Your grandchildren will thank you someday.

Fresh organic apple, orange, carrot and ginger juice.....this afternoon's pick me up

I'll continue to buy my organic fruit and vegies.  I don't buy chemicals to clean the house, I use eco products but I may decide to make my own in the future.  I use organic face and hair products where possible.  I'll continue to reuse, recycle and reduce at every opportunity and try to encourage others to do the same.  I don't want my grandson's generation left to deal with the mess we have made.

Homemade, Healthy and the girls are Happy .........

My first batch of homemade yoghurt.....huge success...didn't know that making yoghurt was this simple...Just boiled up the 7 little jars in the boiler......mixed the organic long life milk (must be long life as this has been heat treated to 91c)........with Acidophilus Biphidus culture.....added a few tablespoons of full cream milk powder...only added if you like thick yoghurt.....mix and pour into the sterilised jars...into the yoghurt maker for 6 hours and voila.....beautiful creamy pot set yoghurt...easy and economical.....

Boil jars to sterilise, mix milk and culture

Into the jars and then into the yoghurt maker for 6 hours.
Have also been into the juicing.......so far only doing carrot, apple and a bit of kale.....tastes great but need to get a bit more adventurous with the ingredients....would like to do all green juices but they take a bit of getting used to .....will continue bit by bit and see how it goes....good news is the girls love the scraps that are left behind in the juicer......they peck away happily, so it's a win win.....everybody's happy

Prepare vegies and  fruit and into the juicer....goodness in a glass...

The chooks love the remains from the juicer......the girls eat it all ....no waste...fantastic
The joy I get from making things myself, trying to avoid waste, and making healthy and nutritious things to eat and drink is amazing.....it really is the simple things that make life great.....it inspires me to think there is so much more I can do.....Life is what you make it....and I am determined to do whatever I can to reduce my impact on the planet, cook from scratch, live well and laugh often....PS: happy birthday to my man.
